Le 4 juillet 1776, des colons britanniques installés en Amérique ont coupé les ponts avec le Roi George III après avoir tenté à plusieurs reprises de rester attachés à la Couronne Anglaise par la négociation. A la suite de cette rupture, les Pères Fondateurs ont signé la Déclaration d’Indépendance : les États-Unis d’Amérique sont nés. La Guerre d’Indépendance (la Révolution américaine) éclatera suite à cette proclamation. Elle se finira en 1781 après la bataille de Yorktown, notamment grâce au soutien des troupes françaises et de la Marine française. Aujourd’hui, comme hier, les américains marquent cette date par des feux d’artifice, des pique-niques et des barbecues, entre amis ou en famille.

On July 4th, 1776, the British colonists cut ties with King George III after trying almost everything to remain attached to the English crown. Faced with no other choice, the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence and the United States of America was born. The American Revolutionary War would last for several years until 1781 and the decisive Battle of Yorktown, in which the British Army was defeated, notably thanks to French troops and naval support. Today, as in the past, Americans will celebrate this important date with fireworks, picnics and barbecues, celebrating with both family and friends.
